Symptoms of Diabetes
Diabetes is a blood glucose disorder in which either the blood sugar level increases or decreases than normal. The condition in which blood sugar levels increase more than normal is called hyperglycemia and the condition when blood sugar goes down the normal range is called hypoglycemia. Symptoms are also different in both conditions. Also, symptoms may differ in men, women and children.
There are four types of diabetes:
- Type 1 diabetes
- Type 2 diabetes
- Prediabetes
- Gestational diabetes
Symptoms can appear as soon as the onset of diabetes starts.
General symptoms
- Increased thirst
- Increased hunger
- Unexplained weight loss
- Frequent urination
- Fatigue
- Unhealed wounds
- Blurred vision
Symptoms in women
Women with diabetes may have symptoms such as:
- Urinary tract infections (UTI)
- Yeast infections
- Dry and itchy skin
Symptoms in men
Along with the general diabetic symptoms men may have:
- Decreased sex drive
- Erectile dysfunction
- Poor muscle strength
Symptoms of type 1 diabetes
Type 1 diabetes affects only a short population of people and it’s little uncommon among adults. In this disease, the immune system starts attacking B cells that are responsible for insulin production. This is why insulin doesn’t produce insufficient amounts as needed by the body.
Symptoms of type 1 diabetes are:
- Increased thirst
- Increased hunger
- Frequent urination
- Fatigue
- Muscle weakness
- Blurred vision
Symptoms of type 2 diabetes
Type 2 diabetes is a condition in which the body either doesn’t produce insulin in enough amounts or the body cells are unable to utilize it. It affects a wide population of adults worldwide. The symptoms are similar to that of type 1 diabetes.
Symptoms of type 2 diabetes are:
- Increased thirst
- Increased hunger
- Frequent urination
- Delayed wound healing
- Fatigue & weakness
- Numbness and tingling in the hands and feet
- Darkened skin, specifically in the neck and armpits
Gestational diabetes
Gestational diabetes is a condition that happens during pregnancy. Expected mothers have high chances of getting the disease and passing it to their child also. Though, gestational diabetes can be managed by adopting a healthy weight and lifestyle.
Symptoms of gestational diabetes are:
- Frequent urination
- Increased thirst and hunger
- Nausea and vomiting
- Fatigue
- Unintended weight loss
- Yeast infection
- Blurred vision
